(KansasReporter) TOPEKA, Kan. – The furloughs announced for lawmakers on the opening day of the Kansas Legislature have been delayed, Michael White, chief of staff for state Senate President Stephen Morris, confirmed to KansasReporter Friday morning.
GOP leaders ordered furlough days and other cost-cutting moves for lawmakers on Monday during the brief opening day ceremonies in both the state House and Senate.
A number of legislators had concerns about the furloughs, White said.
“After much debate and consideration, we decided to postpone,” he said.
The original plan was to furlough legislators without pay the first three Fridays of the session. The legislature would adjourn on Thursdays and resume on Monday. GOP leaders also proposed a 5 percent pay cut for legislators.
The idea was for lawmakers to do something extra to help cut spending. The state’s budget deficit is estimated to hit nearly $400 million for fiscal 2011, starting in July.
The furloughs are not off the table, White said. Discussions are continuing and White hopes for an announcement next week.
